The Mourne Coastal Route has a few start off points from the County Down coastline. This part of the drive starts in the quaint seaside town of Strangford, the route runs along the coast of County Down, through an area known as Lecale.
In leaving Strangford follow the (A2) towards the beach of Ballyhornan bay which provides a great coastal path to explore. Follow the route on to the beautiful fishing village of Ardglass famous for its Harbour port and many medieval tower houses. The next village is Killough, a coastal village on the Irish sea shore. The coastline wraps around St Johns Point Lighthouse, you could book an overnight stay in the self catering poperty on site.
Rossglass, Minerstown and Tyrella beaches are next on the route, each with their own attributes and viewpoints of the Mourne Mountains. Continuing on your route (A2), you will meet the coastal element again in Dundrum best known for its Norman Castle and Dundrum Bay. The route passes by Murlough National Nature Reserve, a fragile 6000 year old sand dune system owned by the National Trust and managed as Ireland’s first Nature Reserve since 1967. Finally approach your destination in Newcastle County Down, for stunning views of seaside and alluring mountain peaks!
