About

Saints and Scholars Tour of Downpatrick

As part of the Aspiring Geopark Lúnasa Festival 2022, join us on a two hour walking tour of historic Downpatrick with your host and tour guide, Brigid Watson.

Downpatrick is the historic county town of Down and one of Ireland's oldest towns. There is a long history of settlement on the site from prehistoric times. It is a Christian site dating back to the time of Saint Patrick and was a monastic site. From Cathedral Hill there are panoramic views across the countryside to the Mourne Mountains. Down Cathedral is a magnificent building and welcomes visitors from all over the world. There are many other interesting buildings in the town including Down County Museum. Nearby is the Saint Patrick's Centre which has an exhibition, shop and restaurant.
During this tour you will get an appreciation of the historic importance of Downpatrick and its' significance as one of the most important spiritual sites on the island of Ireland. Entertaining and informative walk and talk tour led by local, specialist guide, Brigid Watson, Sustainable Journeys Ireland.
The two hour tour suitable for all fitness levels and none.

Participants will be provided with their own individual audio set and disposable earphones.

Meeting point for the tour: Front of Down Cathedral
