About
The event taking place over the 14th and 15th of September is that our beautiful church will be open for visitors. There is no need to book, just pop along between 12.30 and 3pm on the open days. St John's Church dates back to 1832 and is build on an area called Black Rock, on the southern side of Newcastle, it is believed that the name is derived from the black shingle that can be seen along the beach close by. From the front the church has stunning views of the coastline from Newcastle all the way over to the Lighthouse at St John's Point. To the back of the church the Mountains of Mourne are visible and on a clear sunny day provide a breath-taking backdrop to our church.
The church was enlarged in 1876 and again in 1902. The Rectory in King Street was completed in 1901. An organ by Messrs Nicholson & Lord of Walsall, in England was installed in 1902 and the peal of 6 bells was added in 1979. In 2019 our church Spire was repaired; the bell platform was restored, and the bells were serviced and certified. At different times in the year, we would have professional bell ringers come and play the bells for the local community.
St John's has a number of stained-glass windows in the main body of the church, the choir room and the entrance vestibule. On a bright sunny day the windows cast the church in a variety of beautiful colours, that adds the romance and atmosphere.
In more recent years, the church has added various sound systems, loop system, TV displays and under pew heaters, which add comfort and practical support to anyone who may attend.
At this open event you will be able to look around the church, have a quiet and reflective space for personal prayer or meditation, a chance to read the history of church and see what we have going on for the local community and an opportunity to speak to our Children and Outreach Worker.
