Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is delighted to announce that a new temporary light art trail will open in Downpatrick on Friday 15 March, running until Sunday 24 March.

The Light Trail is a free, family friendly attraction by Stellar Projects, featuring light and sound installations across four locations around Downpatrick.  The installation has been commissioned through funding by the Department for Communities to bring people together and experience Downpatrick in a new way.  Created by various artists, the four artworks will be lit from 6pm to 10pm each night, emitting light, sound and movement to create a fully immersive experience.

Why not take the opportunity to walk the easy-to-follow trail between Downpatrick Arts Centre, the Cathedral, the Grove and outside The Saint Patrick Centre. There is no starting point and the trail can be picked up at any location.

Talking about what the light and sound installation will mean for Downpatrick, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Valerie Harte said, “This light trail is for the people of Downpatrick to enjoy and to help direct trade to the town centre to promote its nighttime economy. It is an exciting time with the forthcoming St Patrick’s Day programme of activities and we look forward to enjoying the next few weeks.”

She continued, “The Council recognises the difficulty that businesses faced in the wake of the recent flooding and continues to support traders and the regeneration of the town through this and other forthcoming initiatives.  Please do come along to experience this public art initiative and make a night of it.”

In addition to the temporary light trail, Downpatrick is looking forward to hosting a number of fabulous events this March, including a wonderful St Patrick’s Day parade and packed programme of family activities on Sunday 17 March, and a captivating chamber music concert, The Passion, in collaboration with The Newry Chamber Music ensemble on Tuesday 19 March.
