A New Cultural Season Arrives at Down Arts Centre - January never stays quiet in Downpatrick. As the lights come up on a new year, Down Arts Centre is opening the doors to its 2026 season and inviting audiences to step into four months of performance, creativity and good company. The January to April programme has now been launched, promising a lively run of music, theatre, comedy, workshops, film and family-friendly moments.
This year’s programme has been shaped as a cultural reset after the festive break; a chance to shake off winter with nights that crackle with personality. The venue is leaning into big emotions and strong storytelling, bringing back familiar faces alongside brand-new voices. Expect live music that fills a room, theatre that lingers in the mind, exhibitions that encourage you to look twice, and a calendar of classes designed to get hands moving again.
Live moments to start the year in style
The new season features a run of headline performances that are already generating chatter. Returning names bring comfort, nostalgia and loyal fans, while fresh productions promise something bold and unexpected. Blues, folk, rock and roots all find a home in the programme, joined by shows that explore Irish storytelling, history and contemporary life. Comedy plays a starring role too, ensuring there is no shortage of big laughs in the darker months.
Create, learn, move and make
Down Arts Centre continues to champion participation, with weekly classes and one-day workshops in everything from wellbeing practices to clay and paint. The ethos is simple: start the year by trying something that feeds either the mind or the imagination. Families will find plenty of reasons to drop in together, while individual visitors can follow their curiosity into pottery wheels, yoga mats, creative writing notebooks, or sound therapy sessions.
Cinema that warms the winter
Film lovers also have a reason to mark the diary. Movies in the Mornings returns with a pick-and-mix of favourites designed for audiences who enjoy a relaxed start to the day. From sweeping romance to Irish-made classics, the screenings provide a quiet cultural ritual for a midweek morning. There are also special events that weave film and live performance into one experience, giving visitors more than a standard screening.
Fresh art on the gallery walls
Spring will see the gallery doors reopen with new exhibitions and artist showcases. Landscapes, animals and personal narratives all find their way into the visual arts programme, offering accessible entry points for casual gallery-goers and families with budding young creatives.
Connection at the heart of it all
Community continues to underpin the Down Arts Centre approach. Local practitioners meet monthly to exchange ideas, visiting theatre companies collaborate with Downpatrick audiences, and long-standing creative groups celebrate major milestones onstage. The season is designed as a gathering place, whether you walk in for a headline gig or simply want to be in a room full of creative energy on a Tuesday night.
