Community History Embroidery Project
This exhibition is the culmination of a project which set out to complete a large-scale embroidery series of our shared history and culture.
A number of women’s groups from around the Newry, Mourne and Down district participated in the project, hosting storytelling sessions which gathered local history stories. These were translated into illustrations to create a series of 24 images depicting this rich community history. Each group met weekly in a community space, to socialise and stitch the panels. With the ages of the participants ranging from 22 to 89, the stories covered many aspects of women’s lived experiences in the area over the last century.
Delivered by Creative Spark and supported by the European Union’s Peace IV Programme.
Heydays and Holidays: A History of the Seaside Resort in County Down
This exhibition looks at the development of seaside resorts from the mid-1800s when the healing power of sea water and sea bathing became fashionable amongst the upper classes. The growth of the railways led to resorts becoming accessible to everyone, enabling seaside towns such as Newcastle, Warrenpoint and Bangor to expand during the Victorian and Edwardian ages. Displays include objects relating to entertainment, transport, photography, fashion and bathing etiquette.
