Celebrating Down County Museum - A Photographic Retrospective

This new exhibition showcases the development of Down County Museum from its saving from derelict prison intended as a car park site, to restored and redeveloped 18^th century Gaol containing a modern and lively Museum.

Photographs have been drawn from the Museum’s archives, revealing four key themes, Unlocking the past: A new future for the ‘Old Gaol’, Collecting the story of Down, A Museum Community and A Museum to be Proud of.

The photographs showcase the extensive work undertaken to restore the buildings and create spaces to preserve, interpret and exhibit the Collection for the local community and visitors. Images of significant milestones in the Museum’s development, and the people who helped to achieve them, are also displayed.

As the Museum looks to the future and our place in a changing world, we also ask visitors to contribute their hopes and visions for the Museum over the next 40 years.

Opening the exhibition, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Deputy Chairperson, Councillor Aoife Finnegan commented, “This exhibition charts the development of the Museum over four decades and celebrates its role as custodian of the region’s rich cultural heritage, and we look forward to the Museum going from strength to strength over the next forty years”.

Noreen Cunningham, Museum Curator, reflected that “Down County Museum is a fantastic resource for the local area and further afield, and this exhibition pays tribute to all those who have contributed to its success over the years”.

The exhibition is now open to the public free of charge until September 2023.

Heydays and Holidays: A History of the Seaside Resort in County Down

This exhibition looks at the development of seaside resorts from the mid-1800s when the healing power of sea water and sea bathing became fashionable amongst the upper classes. The growth of the railways led to resorts becoming accessible to everyone, enabling seaside towns such as Newcastle, Warrenpoint and Bangor to expand during the Victorian and Edwardian ages. Displays include objects relating to entertainment, transport, photography, fashion and bathing etiquette.
