About

Discover the rich architectural heritage of the buildings that dominate Downpatrick's most historic street.

As part of this year's European Heritage Open Days, Down County Museum is hosting free walking tours of historic English Street. Our knowledgeable guides will take you through their varied history, their historic uses and their importance today and plans for the future.

Starting at Down County Museum, the tour will pass the 18th century Southwell Buildings and explore their famous architect. We will learn about the evolving and dramatic history of Down Cathedral, from St. Patrick to Vikings to John De Courcy and beyond!

The tour will uncover the grim and ghastly history of crime and punishment in Downpatrick, taking in the town's original House of Correction, the Victorian Courthouse, the 18th century Old Gaol and its imposing 19th century replacement.

Rest for a moment at the 17th century Denvir's Hotel and hear about the time Daniel O'Connell came to town.

This and more are waiting to be discovered.
