About

On 13 June 2024 at 2pm Dr Gavin Hughes, will visit Newry and Mourne Museum to give the talk Irish Regiments & 'The Longest Day'.

'The very simple aim of Gavin's talk is to give a general background to the 80th anniversary of Operations Neptune and Overlord; he'll look at who was who, what D-Day was, why and how it happened and its impact for us today.

The overall strategy and purpose will be explained, along with the various plans and, in essence, try to do the events, and the men and women, of June 1944 justice.

On the way, we'll also look at the wider contribution of Irish regiments in the war and Normandy campaign and briefly discuss what they did after the 'Longest Day'.
