The 1798 Rebellion: Discovering Local Voices and Stories

Newry and Mourne Museum, Bagenal's Castle, Castle Street, Newry, County Down, BT34 2BY
Battle of Ballynahinch by Thomas Robinson

About

In autumn 2026 Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and Ards and North Down Borough Council will be organising a joint programme of events focusing on the 1798 rebellion. The aim of the project is to explore the wide variety of local stories of the rebellion and uncover hidden and lost voices in the archives and other sources.

We want to encourage as many local groups and individuals as possible to get involved in initiatives which might include organising events, researching local sources, preserving local stories and sites.

If you would like to take part but need more information on where to go to find out more, join us at Newry and Mourne Museum (Bagenal's Castle) on Tuesday 27 January 2026 to hear about archival resources in PRONI and the National Archives of Ireland, gaps in local research, areas that would benefit from further research, resources in local museums and more.
