International Museum Day is an annual event established by International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1977 to highlight the crucial role of museums in cultural exchange, enriching cultures, and fostering understanding among people.
This year it takes place on May 18th and this year’s theme is "The future of museums in rapidly changing communities". As the world navigates an era of rapid transformation, museums stand as vital institutions that foster resilience, innovation, and inclusivity. They are dynamic
spaces that drive social progress and contribute to global sustainability.
To celebrate this event Newry and Mourne Museum is offering free tours of the Museum’s galleries.
The tour focuses on Bagenal’s Castle, a 16th century fortified house, as well as the main exhibitions that include prehistoric material, Newry as a merchant town, the working life of the area and modern experiences of living in a Border area.
These will take place from 20 – 23 May, from 2pm until 3pm. To book please email Declan.Carroll@nmandd.org.
