Newry Artists Past and Present

This new exhibition celebrates the works of talented artists who hail from Newry or who have found inspiration in the local area.

The new exhibition features a collection of fine and applied art, including sculptures, dating from the late 19th century up until the present, and offers a unique opportunity to explore artworks from the Museum Collection that are not typically on display.

At the core of this display is the exploration of how these remarkable artists have utilised their skills to respond to the local landscape, the areas rich history and significant social and political events. In addition to the Museum’s own collection, the exhibition includes several works on loan and exciting new additions, including contemporary and abstract pieces.

The exhibition features the works of esteemed artists such as John Nixon, Margaret Clarke, Colin Turner, John Haugh, John Bannon, Cora Harrington, Sean Hillen, Greag Mac a' tSaoir, Anna-Marie Savage and Russell Reid. Their exceptional talents will undoubtedly captivate visitors.

The exhibition is housed in Gallery Three of the Museum and is open to the public free of charge until 27 April 2024.

Seamus Mallon: The Man and the Politician

The exhibition, ‘Seamus Mallon: The Man and the Politician’ based on several artefacts donated to Newry and Mourne Museum by Mr Mallon’s family in February 2022 are now on display.

During his long political career, he held many positions including, deputy leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) (1979 – 2001), Member of Parliament for Newry and Armagh (1986 – 2005), Member of the Legislative Assembly for Newry and Armagh (1998 – 2003) and deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland (1998 - 2001).

On display are several artefacts from Mr Mallon’s career including a Donegal herringbone overcoat and ties made by Newry based design company, Lorsha. A pass and diary used by Mr. Mallon on his trips to Westminster in which he recorded details of political meetings.

The display, housed in Gallery Three of the Museum, is now open to the public free of charge until June 2023.

Caring for the Community: The Development of Medicine in Newry and Mourne

In this new temporary exhibition attention is given to the role of local dispensaries and healthcare in the 19th century, the development of hospitals in the area, local chemists, the introduction of the National Health Service in 1948 and the impact of the Troubles in the 1970s and 1980s.

A wide range of artefacts dating from the late 19th and 20th centuries, including medical instruments and equipment are on display. They provide a fascinating insight to the development of healthcare in the region.

The exhibition themes and artefacts on display are put into context by the recollections of several local health care professionals which are published in the booklet which accompanies the exhibition.

This exhibition is now open to the public free of charge until September 2023.
