History of Ardglass
Ardglass has a rich history that dates back centuries, it contains more medieval tower houses than any other town in Ireland, a total of four, reflecting its importance as Ulster busiest port in the 15th century.
For over two thousand years, Ardglass has served as a fishing port, flourishing thanks to its position on the east coast of Lecale and its placement by a natural inlet. Its harbour is one of the few in the area accessible at all tide levels, and today it features two fishing piers, the North Pier and South Pier along with several fish processing factories and a marina.
The town name Ardglass is an Anglicised version of the Irish name Ard Ghlais, meaning 'the green height'. The name reflects a time when the sea surrounded much of the town, which stood out prominently against the marshlands
