About

Ott Car Park is a designated parking area located along the Slievenaman Road in the heart of Northern Ireland's Mourne Mountains. Situated at an elevation of approximately 385 meters, it serves as a convenient starting point for several popular hiking trails, including those leading to Slieve Doan and Ben Crom.

Access and Facilities:

The car park is accessible via the Slievenaman Road, which connects to the main thoroughfares leading to the Mourne region. It accommodates 10 vehicles, making it a relatively small and often busy spot during peak hiking seasons. Visitors are advised to arrive early to secure a space, especially on weekends and holidays.

This site is covered by Mourne Shuttle Bus.  The Mourne Rambler stops during July and August only.

Nearby Trails:

  • Slieve Doan: From Ott Car Park, hikers can embark on a trail leading to the summit of Slieve Doan (593 meters). The route is approximately 8km round trip and takes about 4-5 hours to complete. The path offers panoramic views of the Mourne Mountains, including peaks like Slieve Binnian and Slieve Meelbeg, as well as sights like Lough Shannagh and Fofanny Reservoir.
  • Ben Crom: The Ott Trail is considered challenging, with a round trip of approximately 15.6km, typically taking around 5 hours and 42 minutes to complete. Hikers are rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding valleys, reservoirs, and neighbouring mountains.

Safety and Preparedness:

The terrain around Ott Car Park can be steep and challenging, with sections that may be boggy or rocky. Hikers should wear appropriate footwear, carry sufficient water, and be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions. It's also recommended to inform someone of your planned route and expected return time.
