Explore the Quoile: Myths and Legends of the Quoile

Quoile River, Meet at Quoile Countryside Centre, Downpatrick, Co Down, BT30 7JB
Quoile River

About

Today the Quoile river and pondage in Downpatrick, provide an important haven for a diversity of local plant and wildlife species, as well as being a popular place for fishing and walking.

But in the past the then tidal river was crucial to the development of Downpatrick's economy and trade bringing goods and people to and from the town.

If you have ever wanted to know more about the history of the Quoile and its port then why not take part in these walking tours of the riverbank and old quays.

Two very different tours will bring to life the stories of this fascinating area of Downpatrick and some of the people associated with the port.

Join guide, Duane Fitzsimons as he takes us on a journey through some of the stories associated with the Quoile from earliest times to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

From the arrival of St Patrick, to the development of the port and quays by the Southwell family, a number of strange tales and legends have grown up. Find out more in this walk along the river side.

Organised by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council in conjunction with Clean Up the Quoile Group.

Admission is free but tickets must be pre-booked as places are limited.
