A Taste of the Sea

With flowing rivers, expansive lakes, and access to the Irish Sea, County Down is a haven for seafood lovers. There’s no better place to experience the fruits of the sea than the annual Kilkeel Seafood Festival.

Kilkeel is home to Northern Ireland’s largest working fishing fleet. Bring your appetite, because there’ll be fresh fish prepared by a variety of top local chefs. If you’re feeling competitive, look no further than the oyster eating and prawn tailing competitions.

Even if seafood isn’t to your taste, there’s still plenty to see and do. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution give demonstrations of their vital life saving work in the heart of the harbour. You can also try your hand at mending fishing nets.

Families will love the chance to listen to live music and entertainment, all while feeling the bracing sea air in this busy fishing port.

Indulge Your Sweet Tooth

You probably didn’t know that drinking chocolate was invented by Hans Sloane from Killyleagh. Every other year since 2010, his native village hosts the Hans Sloane Chocolate and Fine Foods Festival to honour his memory.

Taking place over a weekend in September, the festival kicks off with a special chocolate themed ball in the marquee at Killyleagh Castle. Dance the night away beneath the castle’s fairy tale turrets.

The rest of the weekend, the Castle grounds become a hive of chocolatiers and other local artisans. Families can take part in a host of activities throughout the day.

Artisan Food After Dark

Four times a year, Newry Twilight Market comes to life after the sun goes down. Savour a range of gourmet dishes from around the world.

Why not wash down your dinner with a craft beer from a local brewery like Whitewater? The honey noted Bee’s Endeavour golden ale is the perfect digestif. Full bar facilities are also available, if beer isn’t your tipple.

Want something to take home? No problem. Local cheese, jam and coffee makers, among others set up their stalls and vie for your custom, so you’ll be spoiled for choice.
