About

Join us as we welcome Dr Andrew R Holmes to Down County Museum to mark the 225th anniversary of the 1798 Rebellion.

All but one of the members of the Society of United Irishmen formed in Belfast in October 1791 were Presbyterians, and the 1798 rebellion in east Ulster was largely a Presbyterian affair. This lecture explores why many Presbyterians in the late eighteenth century were attracted to radical politics and why many more were neither revolutionary nor rebellious.

The talk is free, but booking is required.

Dr Andrew R. Holmes is Reader in History and Chair of the Religious Studies Research Forum at Queen's University Belfast. He is the author of The Shaping of Ulster Presbyterian Belief and Practice (2006) and The Irish Presbyterian Mind … 1830-1930 (2018), both published with Oxford University Press, and is currently editing with Gladys Ganiel The Oxford Handbook of Religion in Modern Ireland.
