About

St John's Church in Newcastle is open for visitors 13th and 14th September 2025.

We are delighted that as well as our beautiful church being open for people to look around, meditate, pray or learn about its history, we will have artwork by local artists on display and woodcraft items that have been made locally at The Ark being showcased during this time. Families and children are warmly invited and we will have some activities for any children who attend. St John’s is a beautiful church with an amazing backdrop of the Mourne mountains and a frontal view of the sea. On clear days you can even see the Isle of Man. We are truly blessed to be in such a picturesque part of the world.

As well as our stunning views we have a large piece of local history attached to our church. St John’s on the Rock was founded in 1832, over the years the church has been extended and in 1902 our organ was installed. In 1970 a peal of 6 bells was added to this beautiful church. In 2019 restoration work took place on the bell tower. The bells of St John’s still ring loudly and clearly over the town of Newcastle each Sunday morning and are a joy to hear. We have been very blessed in 2024 to have had a tour of professional bell ringers attend the church and perform a few medleys, we had Kilbroney bell ringers attend a wedding in August, where the bells were rang for the newly married couple and in late August we had a team attend St John’s as part of their bell ringing tour. You are warmly welcomed to come and see around our lovely church.
