About
This talk by Dr Gavin Hughes will briefly outline the context of four major - and dramatic - battles fought in June 1798 as part of the United Irishmen's Campaign. Using gripping first hand accounts and sources, it will precisely detail the course of these engagements between United Irish and Crown Forces that hot summer. It will also discuss any interesting archaeological features or artefacts (particularly from the battles of Saintfield and Ballynahinch) and suggest other local places to visit in relation to the campaign.
Dr. Gavin Hughes is currently Director of the Irish Conflict Archaeology Network at the Trinity Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, Trinity College Dublin. He works and broadcasts on many archaeological and military subjects, from prehistory to the Second World War. His forthcoming books include ones on 1798, Irish Castles and the Franklin Expedition. He is one half - along with Co. Down musician and folklorist Anne Harper - of the Homespun History Podcast.
