About
Castlewellan Arboretum is an arboretum of great historic importance. The walled garden dates from the 1750's and was originally a kitchen garden and orchard, created by William Annesley.
In the 1850's the garden had a major transformation under the 4th Earl, William Richard Annesley, who built a glasshouse range along with new paths, fountains, and trees. After his death in 1874 he was succeeded by his brother Hugh who continued with the tree collecting , resulting in one of the finest gardens in the country. Today we have many champion trees, the second highest in Ireland. Conservation work continues including the rebuilding of two of the Victorian glasshouses.
The spring garden from the 1880's are to be rescued, this is just some of the important conservation work to be done over the next two years.
