There’s nothing quite like a springtime ramble through Castlewellan Forest Park, especially when you’ve got a curious border collie like Finn leading the way, nose to the ground and tail in the air. We set out on a bright morning, keen to stretch our legs and take in some fresh Mourne Mountain air – and Castlewellan didn’t disappoint.
We started our walk on Crow Road, a great starting point that gently winds into the heart of the forest. From the get-go, Finn was in his element – sniffing out every trail. The route hugged the beautiful Castlewellan Lake, offering stunning views and plenty of natural beauty for both two-legged and four-legged explorers.
It’s impossible not to notice the extensive renovation work going on throughout the park. While a few areas were sectioned off, it’s clear that something truly special is taking shape. The upgrades are already making a difference – smoother paths, and improvements to the forest infrastructure are all underway. When it’s all complete, Castlewellan is going to be an even more incredible spot for walkers, dogs, cyclists, and families alike.
Of course, we couldn’t ignore the devastation caused by Storm Eowyn back in January. The damage was significant, with fallen trees and blocked paths in many areas. But hats off to the park staff, and all agencies involved – the clean-up effort has been phenomenal. Trails have been cleared, safety has been restored, and the park is once again welcoming visitors with open arms.
After a solid loop around the lake, we made our way back to the car park, where a well-earned coffee at Synge & Byrne was waiting. Finn had his own little snack while I enjoyed a flat white and admired the peaceful surroundings. It was the perfect end to a fantastic forest adventure.
We both left with muddy paws and happy hearts – and no doubt in our minds that we’ll be back again soon. Castlewellan Forest Park is a gem, and with all the improvements underway, it’s only getting better.
Until next time, 🐾
