Carlingford Lough Greenway is a breathtaking walking and cycling 20km route from Newry City to Carlingford. Explore one of Ireland's most scenic greenways, stretching from the heart of Newry City to the medieval village of Carlingford. The Carlingford Lough Greenway follows the former railway line along the coast of Carlingford Lough, offering stunning views of the Mourne Mountains, Cooley Peninsula, and tranquil waterscapes. Newry to Omeath – The Heart of the Greenway

The first section of the Carlingford Lough Greenway from Newry City to Omeath is around 10km in length. Beginning at the Albert Basin or Victoria Lock in Newry City, the route traces the historic Newry Ship Canal, a gateway once used by trading vessels reaching the Irish Sea. Victoria Lock provides a peaceful heritage stop along the way, perfect for taking in panoramic views of Carlingford Lough framed by the majestic Mourne Mountains and Cooley Peninsula. It’s an ideal spot for a rest, photos, and a picnic. 

The Carlingford Lough Greenway is a purpose built shared pedestrian and cycleway trail, starting from Newry City, follow the greenway along the middle bank of the Newry Canal. Suitable for bicycles, pushchairs, and walkers of all abilities.

This first section is ideal for families, leisure cyclists, and anyone looking to enjoy a scenic cycling trail close to Newry City. The Full Greenway Experience – Newry City to Carlingford
