"McCanns - A Century and a Half of Baking in Newry"

Newry and Mourne Museum, Bagenal's Castle, Castle Street, Newry, County Down, BT34 2BY
Workers in McCann's Bakery, Newry County Down

About

150 years after the first loaf was removed from the primitive ovens of Thomas McCann's Bakery, the fifth generation of the family presides over an enterprise which is as strong and vibrant as at any time in its history."

McCann's became synonymous with Newry and with bread and confectionery of the highest quality throughout Ireland and further afield. Hugh McShane tells the story of a baking dynasty that not only provided employment for hundreds but created a legacy of manufacturing and business excellence that endured into the late 20th century.
