With the banjo on my side: the Life and Times of Singer Margaret Barry | Ring of Gullion Autumn Fest

7 Mountain Road, Lislea, Newry, County Down, BT35 9UG
Margaret Barry

About

As part of the Ring of Gullion Autumn Fest we are delighted to welcome Alan Wood — singer, researcher, and archivist — to South Armagh for an engaging presentation titled With the Banjo on My Side: The Life and Times of Margaret Barry, exploring the remarkable journey of one of Ireland's most iconic folk singers.

Alan Lomax first discovered Margaret Barry in 1951, during his Irish field recording trip. Alerted by Seán Ó Boyle, Lomax and his assistant Robin Roberts met and recorded Barry in Dundalk, beginning a long and fruitful collaboration that helped bring her voice to international audiences.

Alan Wood, from County Leitrim, is an archivist with the Irish Traditional Music Archive in Dublin and brings a wealth of insight and passion to this special event.

Following the presentation, we will sit back and enjoy a live musical performance of some of Barry's repertoire by members of her family.

Light supper will be served.

Booking is essential. To book your place email ringofgullionfestival@gmail.com or contact Kate on 07803600877
