'Night Garden' art installation by Stellar

About

Downpatrick Light Trail is a free, family friendly attraction by Stellar Projects, featuring light and sound installations across four locations around Downpatrick.  The installation has been commissioned through funding by the Department for Communities to bring people together and experience Downpatrick in a new way.  Created by various artists, the four artworks will be lit from 6pm to 10pm each night, emitting light, sound and movement to create a fully immersive experience.

Where are the Downpatrick Light Trail installations?

Why not take the opportunity to walk the easy to follow trail between Down Arts Centre, Down Cathedral, down through The Grove to St Patrick Square. There is no starting point so the trail can be picked up at any of these locations.

Interpretation of the art installations:

Fireside Stories

Fireside stories is inspired by magical memories of tales around the campfire; the telling of stories and families coming together to share special moments. The striking installation creates the appearance of a giant, dancing fire, burning bright and strong in the surrounding landscape. The text ‘dreams come alive in firelight and wonder’ is engulfed by the flames.  Fireside Stories is accompanied by an atmospheric soundtrack by Oliver Vibrans and an enchanting performance for families ‘Journey to a Forgotten World’ by Fully Booked Theatre.

The Night Garden (where the wild flowers grow)

A tranquil and beautiful wildflower meadow is brought to life at night. The Night Garden allows the beauty of a summer garden to bloom, creating a sense of peace and joy, celebrating the simple pleasure to be found in the natural world. Beautiful imagery is projected onto the large cylindrical structure, creating a mesmerising feature within the surrounding landscape. Animated features form part of the artwork. Flowers sway and dance in the sunlight, birds and butterflies flutter in and out of view and bees fly by, transforming the space into a garden full of life. The artwork plays with scale and perspective by putting the viewer amongst towering blooms and transporting them to a summer’s day, with 360-degree views.

The Stars Come Out at Night

A striking installation which captures the beauty and wonder of the night sky, bringing a glimmer of starlight right down to earth. The large sculptural piece slowly rotates to reveal beautiful star patterns on the surrounding landscape. When it revolves, internal lighting creates a mesmerising temporary universe of stars which dance across the ground for visitors, capturing the magic of a sky full of stars.
